Keeping safe on campus

Your safety is important to us - we've put in place specific measures to ensure you are safe on campus.

We're continuing to follow government guidelines and working closely with Public Health England to protect our students, staff and visitors to campus. Your safety is our priority and so that could mean reintroducing restrictions if we are advised to do so, but we hope we won't have to. For that reason, we're also encouraging all students to be vaccinated before arrival.

What are we doing at the start of term?

  • Face coverings: Staff and students are expected to wear face coverings indoors, particularly when moving through buildings, or in large fixed seating lecture theatres.
  • Small group teaching: Most small group teaching - including seminars, workshops, laboratory and studio practicals - will be in person with an expectation that these sessions are risk assessed locally in consultation with the health, safety and environment team and/or estates teams where necessary.
  • Lecture-based teaching: Lectures will be delivered online and on campus, at 100% capacity. Where face to face teaching is delivered, we will accommodate students unable to travel to the campus with online access.
  • Teaching room capacities: All rooms have been allocated based on the full cohort size. Small group teaching will take place predominantly in person and lecturers should ensure the space is appropriately ventilated (following the relevant instructions for the room), and at 100% capacity.
Teaching labs should be used in line with local risk assessments and guidance – in many cases 1m distancing and other mitigations (eg use of PPE) should allow for these to be used at 100% capacity.
  • Ventilation – you should check the ventilation guidance in any rooms you are using and follow any instructions given. Ventilation across campus was reviewed as part of the Covid 19 risk assessment for reopening buildings and those assessments remain valid. Further information on ventilation is available here or you can contact estates-helpdesk@brunel.ac.uk for advice.
  • Risk assessments: all areas are expected to review and update risk assessments to ensure that they remain fit-for-purpose.

Please keep up with the safety guidance on our Covid Hub.

 Teaching spaces

  •  All teaching spaces will be thoroughly cleaned between 5am and 9am each day

  • Disinfectant wipe dispensers are available in all classrooms and lecture theatres for staff and students to use - these can be used to disinfect desks and equipment on arrival

  • Keyboard covers are in place on communal keyboards for easy cleaning

  • Touch points around teaching space entrances will be frequently disinfected throughout the day

  • Large group teaching will be a combination of online and in person at 100% capacity

  • Small group teaching will take place predominantly in person and lecturers should ensure the space is appropriately ventilated (following the relevant instructions for the room) at 100% capacity

  • Teaching labs should be used in line with local risk assessments and guidance – in many cases 1m distancing and other mitigations (eg use of PPE) should allow for these to be used at 100% capacity

  • All enquiries relating to space management should be directed to the Estates department

 Research Spaces (Workshops/Laboratories)

  • These spaces should be used in line with local risk assessments and guidance on ventilation and room capacities

  • In many cases 1m distancing and other mitigations (eg use of PPE) should allow for these to be used at 100% capacity

  • All enquiries relating to space management should be directed to the Estates department

 Library

  • The Library will be reviewed and risk assessed locally, ensuring that good working practices are in place to ensure staff and student safety with 1m distancing in place

  • Library staff will ensure the space is ventilated in line with the relevant guidance

  • The use of face coverings will be encouraged

  • Access to the Library will be open with no need for students to book a study space

 Other:

  • Spacing out seating, where needed, reducing class sizes

  • Maintaining hand sanitisers, virucidal wipes and safety screens across campus

  • Keeping Perspex screens in place at service points in the Library and our shops, cafes and restaurants - and using cashless payments

  • Using removable keyboard covers in our labs and the Library and providing wipes for these to be cleaned during the day

  • Thoroughly cleaning all of our buildings for your return and increasing cleaning operations - starting at 5am and then throughout the day

  • Checking toilets regularly and restocking throughout the day

  • Encouraging everyone in the community to get vaccinated

  • Supporting anyone who shows symptoms of Covid-19 to self-isolate and if students need to quarantine on their return ensuring they can do so in self-contained flats on campus
