Brunel 3D Tool
Doctoral students are expected to take responsibility for shaping, managing and directing their research training (taking advice from their supervisor) and to reflect on their training and development needs to assist in their future employability.
In order to help research students to reflect on their training and development needs, we have developed the Brunel 3D Researcher Development Tool©. Using this tool, students are encouraged to reflect upon their current competencies in three broad areas.
- Skills needed to do your research
- Skills needed to disseminate your research
- Skills needed to develop your research and career
At present the 3D Tool is provided as a Word template with space to record existing skills and to identify short and longer term training and development needs.

We are still developing and evaluating this tool and would welcome your feedback. Please email your comments to firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line 3D Tool.
We would encourage research students to complete regular self assessments with the tool (discussed with their supervisors).
