Strategic Plan 2008-2012

Vice-Chancellor's Foreword

Brunel people have always brought enthusiasm, commitment and a belief in the University's ideals to both their teaching and their research - and also to their dealings with each other. It is these qualities that have made this University a place ready to embrace change and challenge, and able to evolve and move forward.

It is no surprise to me, then, that those Brunel people have devoted so much time and energy to the 12-month project that has generated this new phase of the University's Strategic Plan.

As with all the very best universities, our focus continues to be on quality teaching and quality research. Success in these areas leads inevitably to the education of able and confident graduates who, in turn, increase our reputation in the world at large. Our interaction with, and impact on, industry, business and society through our research reinforces that reputation and attracts more investment and collaboration.

However, the way we conduct ourselves and achieve our ambitions also says much about us, and the set of values embodied in this Plan will ensure that our successes bring with them the self-confidence and mutual respect that come from belonging to a supportive and confident community.

I have truly enjoyed the wide-ranging debate and consultation that has gone into producing this Plan. I count myself fortunate, too, that this has coincided with our energetic and enthusiastic preparations for the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. Both projects have been hard work, but Brunel people have always recognised the importance of taking on new challenges in a creative and ambitious way. It is these qualities that will ensure our Vision - boldly stated at the start of this Strategic Plan - is attainable.
